The True Cost of Self-employment

Do you think you are ready to make that leap to full self-employment? The profit from your part-time (up till now :-) business is matching or exceeding your regular paycheck, so you think it�s time to fire your boss and make do without that paycheck. Before you take that final step to personal freedom, make sure you truly understand what you are giving up. Your employer paid benefits may cost you more than you realize. For many people it will take more than $40,000 of profit per year to replace a $40,000 annual salary.

When I talk about your employer paid benefits I�m not referring to the �free� office supplies, subsidized soft drinks, or even the occasional free meal at the holiday party. The items that you need to consider are the benefits that are going to cost you the most money. Although if you really like soda I guess you might want to include this too! According to a survey published by the US Chamber of Commerce in January 2004, employer paid benefits averaged 42% of an employees salary in 2002. That means you need an additional 35 � 45% more than your current salary to make up for these lost benefits.

If this number shocks you, then let�s take a look at some of the typical benefits employers provide. Again, based on the US Chamber of Commerce's survey medical insurance cost approximately 15% of an employee's salary. However, employers also cover the cost of many other forms of insurance. They include

# Disability,
# Dental,
# Vision,
# Life,
# Unemployment,
# Long Term Care Insurance, and
# Workers Compensation

You might be thinking that you pay premiums for these products already. Even if you do, your employer is most likely paying the lion�s share of the cost. Not to mention that many times the premiums you are paying are using pre-tax dollars. This means you end up paying less in taxes because the amount of your premium is deducted prior to calculating your taxable income.

When you own a home-based not only are are you going to be responsible for the full cost of all forms of insurance using after-tax dollars, you are going to be responsible for self-employment taxes. Self-employment taxes include the employer paid portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes. This means your bill for these taxes are going to double. Instead of paying 7.65% of your income for these, you will now pay 15.30%. And don�t forget about having to pay estimated taxes. You will have to file and pay taxes 4 times a year now, instead of just once. Not only do your taxes increase so do the headaches and the cost of filing!

The second highest benefit cost is your retirement benefits. Your employer�s 401(k) match guarantees an immediate return of up to 100% on your money, depending on how much your company will match and how much you contribute. If your company has a defined benefit pension plan, you are losing a guaranteed income in retirement. You are also taking on the additional risk because you are 100% responsible for investing the money to replace it.

These are only a few of the largest items that make up the 30 � 40% of your salary that will become your responsibility when you become self-employed. Your company might be paying for many other perks also. Some other things you might want to consider are

# company car (this includes gas and maintenance)
# annual or performance bonuses
# professional training or expenses (including professional journal or society dues)
# software license that let you use programs like Microsoft Office programs on your home computer
# vacation pay (that�s right, you no longer get paid when you take days off)

All of these, and any others you might be able to think of will needed to be included in the total cost of becoming self-employed.

I hope you don�t think I�m trying to discourage you from finally being able to become your own boss. I just know that the excitement of finally making this move can make us forget about some of the �extras� we are receiving. You are considering a very serious change and need to make sure that the benefits are going to outweigh ALL of the costs.

One sentence you should commit to memory

�Wouldn�t it be nice if there was an Easy Button for life?� This question is the tag line to a TV commercial by the office supplies store, Staples.

The ad depicts people in various predicaments, including a bewildered boy called on by his teacher, a dad trying to change two babies� diapers at the same time, and surgeons about to perform an unfamiliar procedure. Each of these people, at the critical moment, pushes a big button with the word, �Easy� written on it, to get them through a difficult situation. (Then, of course, you are reminded that doing business with Staples is easy.)

This commercial got me thinking, �What if there were an Easy Button for my inner brat?� Just one zap, and it�s gone.

I wish. Unfortunately there is no sure-fire way to banish the inner brat altogether.

But there is one simple, yet powerful tool to stop the inner brat dead in its tracks, especially when you�re angry, fuming, pouting, embarrassed or feeling jealous. This tool is the following sentence:

�It�s not about me.�

Commit that sentence to memory. It�s going to come in handy:
-- when people make sarcastic remarks
-- when they don�t return your phone calls
-- when they brag about themselves
-- when they nag you
-- when they don�t thank you for a gift or favor
-- when they take advantage of you

Zap. �It�s not about me.�

All the situations listed above describe other people behaving in a critical, demeaning or inconsiderate manner. You may happen to be the brunt of their inner brats, but their behavior really reflects more about them than about you.

Next time you are confronted with other people�s rudeness, remind yourself: �It�s not about me.� Make that sentence your �Easy Button.�

How will this help? By voicing the sentence to yourself, you automatically shift perspective. Your attention is diverted away from you and your hurt feelings, so that you can be more objective, and less prone to overreacting. You remain cool-headed. Your inner brat has little chance of taking over and ruining your day by dwelling unnecessarily on the situation.

�It�s not about me� works most of the time to calm you down when feeling hurt or insulted. Occasionally, however, you might need something extra to help shift your perspective. If so, follow up with this question: �Would I expect anything else from this person?� Your answer will likely be �No, such behavior is quite characteristic of this person.�

Once you shift your perspective, decide what you�re going to do about the other person�s rude remark or behavior. That will vary, depending on the situation and the person. In any case, just the act of making a decision will reinforce your feeling in control -- even if the decision is to do nothing.

Now that you are armed with your own new Easy Button, you are well prepared to keep other people�s inner brats from triggering your own.

he is with the accusation itself.
� He uses such phrases as �To tell you the truth,� �To be perfectly honest,� and �Why would I
lie to you?�
� He has an answer to your question down pat, such as giving precise detail to an event
occurring two months ago.
� He stalls by asking you to repeat the question or by answering your question with a question.
�Where did you hear that?� �Could you be more specific?� or even repeating your question
back to you, at an attempt at sounding incredulous. For example, �Did I sell you a puppy with
a heart condition? Is that what you�re asking me?�
� What he�s saying sounds implausible, such as �During the past ten years, I have never used a
specific racial epithet.�
� He offers a preamble to his statement starting with �I don�t want you to think that�� Often
that�s exactly what he wants you to think. Whenever someone makes a point of telling you
what they�re not doing, you can be sure it�s exactly what they are doing. Such as, �Not to
hurt your feelings, but��
� He implies through a form of denial. You hear, �He�s having marital problems, but it has
nothing to do with his wife�s new job.� What�s the first thing you ask? �What does his wife
do?� Suddenly you�re in the exact conversation that is �supposed� to have no bearing on the
facts.
� He uses humor or sarcasm to defuse your concerns, rather than responding seriously.
� He offers you a �better� alternative to your request when he is unable to give you what you
originally asked for. Before you accept someone at his word that he has something better to
offer, first see whether he has what you originally asked for. If he doesn�t, then you shouldn�t
believe him.
� All of his facts relating to numbers are the same or multiples of one another. Watch out when
facts, figures, and information have unusual similarities.
� There is evidence of involuntary responses that are anxiety based. Anxiety causes many
things. His breather may appear as a deep, audible inhaling in an attempt to control his
breathing to calm himself. Swallowing becomes difficult; he may clear his throat. His ability
to focus on something is often diminished, unable to pay attention to what�s going on.
� He uses an obvious fact to support a dubious action. For example, let�s say that a guard is
standing watch over a restricted area. It�s his job to check ID�s of those who enter. �I�m not
sure you have authorization,� he says to a man attempting access. �I�m not surprised,�
answered the man, �only a few people are aware of my clearance level. My work here is not
supposed to be known by everyone.�
� He casually tells you something that deserves more attention.
� He exclaims his displeasure at the actions of another who has done something similar so that
you will not suspect him. For instance, if he is trying to throw you off track of his
embezzlement scheme, he may openly chastise another employee for �borrowing� some
office supplies for personal use at home. Your impression is that he is moral person who
objects to something as minor as stealing office supplies. Certainly he cannot be responsible
for a large-scale embezzlement scheme.
� He may casually tell you something that should deserve more attention. �Oh by the way, I�ve
got to go out of town next weekend on business.� If he doesn�t usually travel for work on the
weekends, then you would expect her to make a point of how unusual the trip is. Her
downplaying the trip makes it suspicious. When something out of the ordinary happens and
the person doesn�t draw attention to it, it means that he is trying to draw attention away from
it. Another tactic is running off a long list of items in the hope that one will remain unnoticed.
� If he lies about one thing, everything he says is questionable.
� His story is so wild that you almost don�t believe it. But you do, because if he wanted to lie,
you think that he would have come up with something more plausible.

1. Non-Deductible Personal Living Expenses

All of us have expenses that we incur in everyday living.

Either you rent an apartment or house or you own your residence. Utilities, insurance, rent, mortgage interest, property taxes, and maintenance and repairs are typical costs of operating your home.

Likely, you have a vehicle which also consumes large amounts of cash.

Add to this, dining out, entertainment, gifts, alcoholic beverages, office supplies, telephone and many other expenditures, and you have a significant cash outflow.

In most cases, as an employee, retired person, investor, student, or homemaker, few of these expenses are tax-deductible to you.

This means that you must earn a considerable income, pay your income taxes first, and then use what is left to pay all your expenses.

Some employees may be able to write-off some of their employment related expenses, if such are required by their contract of employment. However, even in this situation, the tax deductions are very limited.

2. Your Own Home Based Business Means Tax Deductions

Now consider the situation where you decide to start your own home based business.

Suddenly, many of your everyday expenses are now being used for business purposes and are now tax-deductible.

If you use one quarter of your home exclusively for business use, you will be able to deduct (or write-off) one quarter of all related occupancy costs. These expenses may include maintenance and repairs (that are not capital in nature), rent, mortgage interest, house or apartment insurance, power, heat, water, and property taxes.

Also tax-deductible are business related telephone expenses, Internet access, office supplies, travel, books, memberships, and a host of other expenditures.

3. Income Splitting with Your Home Based Business

If you have a high paying job, you will pay higher taxes because the rates of tax increase as your income does.

With your own business, you can pay reasonable wages to your spouse and children. In this way, you can legally divert income taxed at your higher rate to your family members that are in a lower tax bracket.

This tax saving technique is called income splitting. It is another good reason why your own home based business is the ultimate tax shelter.

4. Even a Part-Time Home Based Business Works

Even if you have a full-time job, running a part-time business can be advantageous.

Of course, you must actually run a real, moneymaking business. Any attempts to write unprofitable hobbies off will ultimately fail with the taxation authorities.

If you earned eight thousand dollars during the year from your part-time business and were able to deduct eight thousand dollars in car expenses, home office expenses, entertainment costs, office supplies, and other business related expenditures, you would have a net business income of nil. You would pay no tax on this additional income.

Don`t miss this important point! Although these tax deductions are actual, legitimate business expenses, these are expenditures you would probably have made anyway, whether you had a business or not.
