The True Cost of Self-employment

Do you think you are ready to make that leap to full self-employment? The profit from your part-time (up till now :-) business is matching or exceeding your regular paycheck, so you think it�s time to fire your boss and make do without that paycheck. Before you take that final step to personal freedom, make sure you truly understand what you are giving up. Your employer paid benefits may cost you more than you realize. For many people it will take more than $40,000 of profit per year to replace a $40,000 annual salary.

When I talk about your employer paid benefits I�m not referring to the �free� office supplies, subsidized soft drinks, or even the occasional free meal at the holiday party. The items that you need to consider are the benefits that are going to cost you the most money. Although if you really like soda I guess you might want to include this too! According to a survey published by the US Chamber of Commerce in January 2004, employer paid benefits averaged 42% of an employees salary in 2002. That means you need an additional 35 � 45% more than your current salary to make up for these lost benefits.

If this number shocks you, then let�s take a look at some of the typical benefits employers provide. Again, based on the US Chamber of Commerce's survey medical insurance cost approximately 15% of an employee's salary. However, employers also cover the cost of many other forms of insurance. They include

# Disability,
# Dental,
# Vision,
# Life,
# Unemployment,
# Long Term Care Insurance, and
# Workers Compensation

You might be thinking that you pay premiums for these products already. Even if you do, your employer is most likely paying the lion�s share of the cost. Not to mention that many times the premiums you are paying are using pre-tax dollars. This means you end up paying less in taxes because the amount of your premium is deducted prior to calculating your taxable income.

When you own a home-based not only are are you going to be responsible for the full cost of all forms of insurance using after-tax dollars, you are going to be responsible for self-employment taxes. Self-employment taxes include the employer paid portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes. This means your bill for these taxes are going to double. Instead of paying 7.65% of your income for these, you will now pay 15.30%. And don�t forget about having to pay estimated taxes. You will have to file and pay taxes 4 times a year now, instead of just once. Not only do your taxes increase so do the headaches and the cost of filing!

The second highest benefit cost is your retirement benefits. Your employer�s 401(k) match guarantees an immediate return of up to 100% on your money, depending on how much your company will match and how much you contribute. If your company has a defined benefit pension plan, you are losing a guaranteed income in retirement. You are also taking on the additional risk because you are 100% responsible for investing the money to replace it.

These are only a few of the largest items that make up the 30 � 40% of your salary that will become your responsibility when you become self-employed. Your company might be paying for many other perks also. Some other things you might want to consider are

# company car (this includes gas and maintenance)
# annual or performance bonuses
# professional training or expenses (including professional journal or society dues)
# software license that let you use programs like Microsoft Office programs on your home computer
# vacation pay (that�s right, you no longer get paid when you take days off)

All of these, and any others you might be able to think of will needed to be included in the total cost of becoming self-employed.

I hope you don�t think I�m trying to discourage you from finally being able to become your own boss. I just know that the excitement of finally making this move can make us forget about some of the �extras� we are receiving. You are considering a very serious change and need to make sure that the benefits are going to outweigh ALL of the costs.

One sentence you should commit to memory

�Wouldn�t it be nice if there was an Easy Button for life?� This question is the tag line to a TV commercial by the office supplies store, Staples.

The ad depicts people in various predicaments, including a bewildered boy called on by his teacher, a dad trying to change two babies� diapers at the same time, and surgeons about to perform an unfamiliar procedure. Each of these people, at the critical moment, pushes a big button with the word, �Easy� written on it, to get them through a difficult situation. (Then, of course, you are reminded that doing business with Staples is easy.)

This commercial got me thinking, �What if there were an Easy Button for my inner brat?� Just one zap, and it�s gone.

I wish. Unfortunately there is no sure-fire way to banish the inner brat altogether.

But there is one simple, yet powerful tool to stop the inner brat dead in its tracks, especially when you�re angry, fuming, pouting, embarrassed or feeling jealous. This tool is the following sentence:

�It�s not about me.�

Commit that sentence to memory. It�s going to come in handy:
-- when people make sarcastic remarks
-- when they don�t return your phone calls
-- when they brag about themselves
-- when they nag you
-- when they don�t thank you for a gift or favor
-- when they take advantage of you

Zap. �It�s not about me.�

All the situations listed above describe other people behaving in a critical, demeaning or inconsiderate manner. You may happen to be the brunt of their inner brats, but their behavior really reflects more about them than about you.

Next time you are confronted with other people�s rudeness, remind yourself: �It�s not about me.� Make that sentence your �Easy Button.�

How will this help? By voicing the sentence to yourself, you automatically shift perspective. Your attention is diverted away from you and your hurt feelings, so that you can be more objective, and less prone to overreacting. You remain cool-headed. Your inner brat has little chance of taking over and ruining your day by dwelling unnecessarily on the situation.

�It�s not about me� works most of the time to calm you down when feeling hurt or insulted. Occasionally, however, you might need something extra to help shift your perspective. If so, follow up with this question: �Would I expect anything else from this person?� Your answer will likely be �No, such behavior is quite characteristic of this person.�

Once you shift your perspective, decide what you�re going to do about the other person�s rude remark or behavior. That will vary, depending on the situation and the person. In any case, just the act of making a decision will reinforce your feeling in control -- even if the decision is to do nothing.

Now that you are armed with your own new Easy Button, you are well prepared to keep other people�s inner brats from triggering your own.

� He exclaims his displeasure at the actions of another who has done something similar so that
you will not suspect him. For instance, if he is trying to throw you off track of his
embezzlement scheme, he may openly chastise another employee for �borrowing� some
office supplies for personal use at home. Your impression is that he is moral person who
objects to something as minor as stealing office supplies. Certainly he cannot be responsible
for a large-scale embezzlement scheme.

Springtime is when many folks give their homes and offices a good cleaning. For every thing there is a season, and this is the season to get rid of the winter cobwebs. The hardest part of this project is deciding where to begin. The second hardest part is to get started. There is always more to do than time allows and thinking about it can be overwhelming. But, who says it all has to be done in the springtime? Choose what works best for you. Do one room a month or consider cleaning and organizing all the closets before you tackle drawers and shelves. You can establish the program and schedule the time. Remember, organizing is all about changing behaviors and making wise choices.

Before you jump up and dig right in, take time to plan the attack. Organize your thoughts first and then the action stage will be easier. For every hour expended in the planning stage, three to four hours are saved in the execution phase. Spending a little time to save a lot of time is very good advice. So let�s begin to plan.

1. Plan it on paper - Make a list of target areas.

2. Divide and Conquer - Break down large areas into small tasks and determine the action steps necessary to complete each portion.

3. Supplies - Having the right tool for the job makes the task so much easier. Be sure to have ample supplies on hand�garbage bags, storage and recycling boxes, cleaning supplies, rags, step stool�

4. Schedule - Make an appointment with yourself to complete each bite-size area. By now, you are in the habit of scheduling 15-minute blocks of time to accomplish specific tasks. Make and keep those daily appointments with yourself to tackle the clean sweep chores. The process of scheduling converts wishful desires into a commitment.

Step 1 - Purge

Overabundance is a waster � a waster of time, money, space and energy. With too much stuff you waste time looking for what you want; you waste money for storage, maintaining, insuring�; you waste precious room for items seldom or never used; you waste energy just thinking about getting it all organized.

When you take the time to reduce the number of things you have (purge), you will automatically increase the available space for the things you truly love and use. Why would you try to find room in the closet for ten pairs of sneakers when actually you only wear the two newest pairs? For what reason are you keeping the extras? Are you making wise choices with what you actually store? A positive benefit of purging is the release of claustrophobic symptoms. That�s right! There are opportunities every day to make more commitments and with each new commitment, we lose some space � environmental, physical, emotion and mental space.

Simplicity does not mean living an austere and stark life. It means being aware of the illusions of necessities. Simplifying is a choice. You get to decide what simple living means to you. Basically, it means to add joy, fulfillment, passion and love to your existence while eliminating those things that drain you of time, money, space and energy. You can choose to appreciate people, places and things in your life. First purge, then simplify and the process of organizing will be much easier. There will be more breathing space.

You can control clutter only when you have less of it. Unfortunately, many of us find it easier to be buried in clutter than figure out a way to take care of it. Panic sets in when you look at all you have accumulated and wonder where to begin to clear the spaces. Recognizing the fact that you are held in bondage to your possessions will precipitate action to simplify. Let go and feel the freedom!

Step 3 - Organize

When you start the organizing process think retrieval, not storage. The ultimate goal is to be able to find what you want when you want it. Purge the excess, broken and useless stuff and then simplify the remaining items by letting go of the unnecessary. Spend a little time deciding what is truly important in your life. Avoid playing mind games with the belief that it may be useful someday. Beware of the words like someday, maybe, should, somewhere, somehow� Such thoughts only add more pressure to keep items that really add nothing to your life�s purpose. Ask yourself when was the last time you used it and under what circumstances would you need it again. Remember this is all about choices!

Now you are ready to organize those things that you choose � things that are useful, beautiful and add joy to your life. Start with existing storage space first (closets, drawers, shelves). You will discover more room once you have purged the unwanted and simplified the clutter. Refrain from adding new storage areas. New or expanded storage units simply create more places to accumulate more clutter and ultimately disorganization.

A well-organized closet (as well as drawers, bookcases, desk, kitchen, office, car, garage�) saves time, money and effort. Why are you keeping so much? Think about the 80/20 rule � Pareto�s Principle. Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) stated that 80% of work is accomplished by 20% of the people. He was a revolutionary thinker.

You can apply his principle to the clothes in your closets. Simply put, 80% of your clothes are rarely worn. In other words, 20% of the clothes in your closets are worn the majority of the time. So scrutinize the 80% for usefulness and begin the purging process. Deciding what to wear in the morning will be easier with an orderly closet of those frequently worn outfits.

This same idea can be useful when you inspect your files, kitchen cabinets, garden tools, office supplies and every aspect of your life � 20% of your stuff is used frequently, 80% rarely or never. Be willing to discern the importance of 80% of the stuff you have accumulated over the years. Purge the broken, unwanted, unloved and unnecessary. Recognize the important 20% and vow to maintain only those things that you love, that you use and that bring joy to your life.

Finally start the organizing project by gathering and storing objects in the places they are used. The result is that you can easily find what you want when you want it. Strive for �one-motion� storage. When you open a cabinet, closet or drawer and reach in to retrieve something, you want to do it with one hand and without having to move things around. Avoid piling. A good rule is never stack more than three pieces.

Wood Office Furniture

Wooden office furniture consists of desks, credenzas, bookcases, file cabinets, seating, and more. The wooden furniture varies according to the type of wood used; some may be light weight for balancing light objects, and others might be heavy to balance heavy objects. The cost also varies depending on the strength and the workmanship of the furniture.

In general, more expensive furniture usually is made of fine hardwoods such as maple, cherry or oak, or selected softwoods such as pine. Medium-priced furniture may have a combination of different woods on exposed surfaces. As trees don't grow in the shapes and sizes required for making furniture, the branches or pieces of wood are bonded together in different ways to achieve the necessary sizes and shapes. Hence, wooden furniture is costly compared to other types.

Wooden furniture is more suitable for homes, hotels and small offices, but it isn�t feasible to use wooden furniture for a huge office, because of the cost, availability and maintenance. If your web site is a business site, it is a good idea to use the companies name as the domain name or if your site is a personal site try to think of a domain name that is related to the topic of your web site.

Also try to keep your domain name as short as possible, around 5 to 20 characters is fine. The shorter the domain name the easier it will be to remember.

One thing to keep in mind is assumed spelling issues; if you think up a �clever� domain name such as 1luv4u.com � One Love For You (dating service), people may type in oneloveforyou.com believing this is the domain name; or oneluv4u.com, or 1love4you.com etc. This leads to brand problems. In this case the �oneloveforyou.com� name would be best. Another unfortunate example: Flo Office Supplies � flooffice.com?

How do I acquire a domain name?
There are two main ways you can get a domain name. You can either register your domain name yourself or you can get your web host or ISP (Internet Service Provider) to register it for you.

To register a domain name yourself you will need to choose a Registrar. A Registrar is an ICANN accredited domain registration company. There are hundreds of Registrars on the Internet nowadays. The market is becoming increasingly competitive; which means that you can purchase domains names for a low yearly fee.

Most web hosting companies will offer domain registration services to their clients. When you register a domain name through a web host they will register your domain name for you through their own approved registrar. An advantage to having your web host register your domain name for you is that, they have probably done this process many times before; they have all the necessary information ready at hand. This process will save you time and, as long as you give the �correct� domain name desired, there will be no unfamiliar dealings with Registrars.

Why should I keep my domain name registered?
If you loose your domain name you can loose your whole online identity.

Because you can only register a domain name for a year or so, you will need to make sure that you renew it before the expiry date. Once your domain name expires you will no longer own that domain name. Your Registrar will then own it and be able to sell your domain name to the highest bidder. To make sure you don�t loose your domain name you will need to make sure you renew your domain name at least two weeks before it expires.

Also make sure that your information is registered properly, especially if you didn�t register your domain name yourself. Ensure that your information is displayed as the registrant, administrative and billing contacts; most importantly make sure that the email addresses for these contacts are ACTIVE. When you receive any information about your domain name, such as renewals, price changes, etc� an email will be sent to this email address. If you can�t receive any mail from the email addresses listed under the domain names contact then you are at risk of not receiving important notifications about your domain names, which could result in loosing your domain name.

People often miss the importance of having their own unique domain name for their web sites. A domain name represents you, your company and your online presence; as does a �business card�. If you don�t have your own domain name you won�t be able to promote your own online identity and web site on the World Wide Web.

assume that if the price dips below $10 or rises above $50, then
the product sales fall off significantly.

Our challenge is to determine the best rate at which to sell our
product.

Testing has shown us that we can sell 1000 items a week at $10.
Testing has also shown that we can sell 500 items per week at
$50. And testing has shown that we can sell 650 items per week
at $45.

At $10, our projected weekly earnings are $10,000. When we sell
the product at $50, we know that we can earn $25,000 per week.
Most importantly, we know that we can earn $29,250 when our
product is priced at $45.

With the imaginary testing we have done on our imaginary
product, we can easily see that selling our product at $45 per
item will earn us more money over the long haul.

Thus, when we make the decision for a national rollout of our
product, then we will price our product at $45.

Of course, this is a very simplistic analysis of the point I am
trying to make. Though simple, I believe this analogy will help
you understand the methods of developing a product's prices.

PROMOTION

Promotion, on the other hand, is the process of notifying the
consumers for your product or service of your availability to
serve them.

Methods of promotion vary distinctly and should be arranged to
meet very specific goals.

As with product, place and price, promotion should not be left
to chance. You should test every ad, every media, and every
price point to determine the best bang for your promotional
dollars.

HEADS UP!

If you are an online promoter or marketer, please factor in the
most important element concerning the cost of your promotions.

What element is that? Your time!

Value your time at a certain dollar amount, and figure in your
time into the cost of your promotional accounting.

I say this because too many online promoters lose sight of this
concept and spend 20 hours to generate one sale while using free
advertising. Even if you rate your time at the federal minimum
wage, then you will have invested $105 of your time for one sale
that might only net you a gross sale of $45!

ARE YOU TRULY A MARKETER OR ARE YOU JUST A PROMOTER?

Most people who run a business on the Internet call themselves
marketers. Yet, most of these same people are really just
promoters wrapped in the label of a marketer.

True marketers do not promote without a lot of advance work.
They spend time planning, testing and measuring their actions
and results to get the most out of every dollar spent and earned.

Entrepreneurs finesse the art of marketing as they build their
company into a major enterprise.

If you are a promoter who does not keep an eye on the total
marketing equation, then you are bound to fail.

If you do call yourself a marketer, then do what a professional
marketer does. Make sure that every dollar spent is spent well.
Make sure that every dollar earned is put to good use. Market
well so that when the people of the next generation look at your

You will also want to invest in a filing cabinet and a file system. Folders and hanging files will help keep you organized and more efficient. If you are the type of person that thrives on organization, using an in-out basket will also be a time saver for you.

Bigger items that you will need for your business is a good quality printer (inkjet or laser), a photocopier and a fax machine. You can save money and space by purchasing an all in one unit that offers all of these technologies in one machine. This will likely be your most valuable office supply because you will be able to do so much with it.

for the other driver to remember since most people don't write

waste of space. In most cases, adding the "www" before the domain
name is not necessary (ie. www.mrgoodbeer.com is the same as
mrgoodbeer.com). Make sure to test your domain name without the
"www" before using it in any advertising.

Capitalize when appropriate
Use both upper and lower case letters in your URL to help the
reader identify and remember your site (ie. MrGoodbeer.com is
more appealing and memorable than mrgoodbeer.com). Note, most
individual vinyl letters are only available in upper case so this
is not possible with them.

Use color
Bright colors attract the driver's attention.Try red on yellow or
yellow on red.

Read the guidelines carefully
